REFERENCE PHOTOS

BETTER PHOTOS = BETTER DRAWINGS

Better reference photos will result in richer drawings. I often have clients ask me “will this photo work?” Short answer, yes. I can work off almost any photo — even those small, pixelated photos you took on your old cellphone. But I’ll have to make up some of that missing information. Things like hair, lighting and facial features can be enhanced, but it’s best if that information is there in the first place.

My best drawings are born from strong, hi-res source photos.

Good source photos are:
• Large: 5 x 7 at least
• Clear: no pixels, please
• Well lit: This doesn’t mean bright — just lit in a way that shows details, textures and contrast

Just a few tips to consider as you select your photo.
